What’s the Fuss over Uggs?

If you’ve seen Ugg boots in department store windows or even worn by someone you passed by the street on your way to a Christmas party, then you’d know why they’re so popular and trendy these days. Obviously warm and comfortable—they’re basically boots made from animal fur, after all—they are also very fashionable. In fact there are various lineups and designs and colors you can choose from. But where did these chic boots come from anyway?

From Colloquialism to World War to Surfing

While people aren’t really sure where sheepskin (yes, they’re sheepskin) boots originated—whether it was New Zealand or Australia—what’s for certain is that the term Ugg is a colloquial denotation for boots in the Land Down Under. Ugg boots are mostly worn for practical uses centuries ago, then they were worn by soldiers who fought in the World Wars. Again, the boots’ functional warmth and relative comfort may have been major contributors to their becoming soldier boots.

Surfers started using them regularly. They wore the Uggs after getting out of the cold waves they just surfed on as they proved to be efficient in keeping their feet dry and free from moisture. California surfers soon took after their Australian counterparts when Brian Smith, an American surfer, started offering the sheepskins to fellow surfers in the area in the 1970s. By the mid-nineties, the Deckers Outdoor Corporation was the company selling Ugg boots, and through their aggressive marketing campaigns successfully made Uggs more than just surfer equipment. They turned Ugg boots into an emerging fashion trend.

Uggs Today

In Australia when you say Ugg you can possibly be referring to any sort of sheepskin boot, but in the States and other countries where the Ugg trend has spawned, you can only be referring to the high end fashion boots that UGG Australia manufactures. Visit their website today and you’ll see all the shapes and sizes of Uggs they offer. You can expect virtually all of them to have hefty price tags though, so if you’re looking for cheap Uggs, you’d best look elsewhere.

Cheap Uggs aren’t impossible to find though. With a touch of craftiness and with sufficient resourcefulness, you can find yourself an authentic Ugg bargain. There is a risk of getting fooled by counterfeits though—especially when shopping online.

Authentic Uggs

Authentic Ugg boots are twin sheepskin boots. They have a large middle G in the logo; check the website logo for reference. Fakes have synthetic fur inside the boots, the real deal has sheepskin inside and out. The best way to know if you’re seeing the real thing is through knowing what authentic Uggs feel like. You can’t inspect cheap Uggs online by touch though, so be extra careful.
