How to Strengthen Your Linksys Security Password

Your linksys security password is your important tool to protect your connection from being maliciously attacked by intruders. You have to make it a point to set up your linksys router password. A strong password is advisable and you can do this by changing the default password of your router.

Creating a Strong Password

Creating a strong linksys password is simple. The password should contain both letters and numbers, for example: A1; using both lower and upper cases like A1b2; comprising of at least ten (10) characters, such as A1b2CdeF34. The password should be meaningful to you so you can easily remember it but it should be difficult for others to crack.

Changing The Default Password

The default linksys router password is ‘admin’. In newer versions of the router, this default also serves as the username. You need this to enter the configuration settings of your router. Once done, you must change the default password to your preferred strong password.

To change your password, log in to your router’s web page at http://192.168.1.1. Make sure that your router and your pc is connected through the Ethernet cable. As you pull up the web page, you will see a pop up box that will ask you for your username and password.

That is where you are going to enter the default password, and if the page requires you for the username, you may also use the same default ‘admin’. By entering your credentials (username and password) you should be able to log in.

You will see several options to configure the settings of your router. For changing the password however, go to administration and click of the management tab. It is on this tab that you are going to change the default to a strong linksys security password.

As you click the button for password, it will ask you for your password where you will input the strong password that you have created. You will also need to confirm the password by inputting it the second time. Be sure to input exactly the same password in the right cases as your password is case sensitive.

Resetting the Password

If in case you have forgotten your password for whatever reasons or you want to change password as it may have been compromised, what you need to do is to press the reset button of your router for not less than thirty (30) seconds. It shall revert to its original settings or factory default.

Open your web browser and pull up the web page of your linksys router. Follow the same procedure as that of changing the default password. Make sure that you have created a strong password. Fill up the password field and retype your password to confirm.

To verify if your linksys security password is working, unplug the Ethernet cable connecting your router and computer, restart the computer, wait for about twenty (20) seconds, plug back the cable and access the web page of your router. If it accepts your password, then it must be working.

Localhost 127.0.0.1 in DIY Troubleshooting

Waiting around for a technician to find out what’s wrong and fix it just blows, and paying for fast and reliable service from right out of your pocket is simply not an option. So why not delve into network technicalities and try your hand at troubleshooting? But before you dive headlong into the fray, you should know a few things about IP addresses. The IP addresses of not just your computer but all other computers you might be sharing a network with.

IP Address Confusion?

So what was that about 127.0.0.1 anyway? 127.0.0.1 in home network connections refers to your particular PC’s IP. Now you might know how to check your own IP—and Google makes that real easy—and you’d naturally protest to this fact. Your PC does have its own IP address designated by your Internet Service Provider, but the 127.0.0.1 address is the localhost address. It’s the standard loopback connection IP address of every computer.

Okay, slow down and rewind. In layman’s terms, 127.0.0.1 is like the reflexive pronouns “I” and “me” in English. You refer to yourself as “I,” but everyone else does too. Your PC, the localhost (yes, localhost simply means the computer in question), refers to itself with the 127.0.0.1 in home network connections—in all network connections for that matter. So it’s sort of a paradox that the localhost IP is unique to each and every PC on the planet.

Importance of Localhost

Okay, so we’ve established that localhost is your PC. So what? How can knowing that 127.0.0.1 in home network setups simply means “this PC?” You’ve been using programming codes in game developer consoles, so you must’ve used the Windows command prompt to at least ping a site or two through command line interface. Accessing 127.0.0.1 or pinging it means you loop back to your machine (hence the term loopback). Being able successfully ping your own machine means that your software systems and network settings aren’t the issue behind your connectivity problem.

Localhost and Loopback in Network Troubleshooting

Pinging 127.0.0.1 and getting a failed result means you probably need to reinstall bad TCP/IP stacks in your Windows OS’s core system. But if you successfully ping your own loopback address, that means the error is probably in your network hardware or network connections. Localhost IP address 127.0.0.1 is one of the first few steps you’ll take in your goal of DIY troubleshooting.

Apart from being way easier for our web browsers, inputting a web address is also way easier to memorize than IP addresses.
